Spanish retail giant Inditex has officially launched in the British retail sector by opening its first store under the Lefties brand. This step represents a significant strategic shift, given that the brand, established in 1999, originally served solely as an outlet for surplus stock within the group. About ten years ago, the strategy changed, and the brand began offering its own specific collections of clothing, distinguishing itself from being solely a seller of surplus goods.
The store in Liverpool, which opened on Thursday, several weeks after the website went live, is the first of a total of three planned locations in the United Kingdom this year. The other two stores, planned for opening, are located in the Lakeside shopping centre in Essex and in the centre near Newcastle. It is expected that more locations will open in the coming year, indicating an ambitious expansion within the British market.
A key feature of the new locations is the high level of automation. The stores use advanced robotics to reduce labour costs, including self-service payment systems. A notable feature is the technology that scans the entire basket in one go, speeding up the checkout process. In addition, the store has a specific system for sorting clothing, which automatically separates clothing by department, preparing it for sale on the shop floor or for storage in the warehouse, thereby optimising logistics within the store.
As for the assortment, the store currently offers a wide range of clothing, including men's, women's, and children's clothing, as well as home textile products such as bedding. Special attention is paid to thermal wear, which represents a direct response to competition in the basic underwear market. Although prices are slightly above the level of competitors such as Primark, they are still below the prices of similar brands such as Shein. In addition to competitive prices, customers can benefit from free delivery within the UK, which distinguishes the brand from many competitors who offer only a click-and-collect option.
In addition to the British market, the brand has achieved significant success in other European markets. Given that it is the fastest-growing brand within the Inditex group, stores have recently opened in France and Italy. Given current trends, entry into the German market is planned for spring, further confirming the strategic importance of this brand within the group's global network.
