Analyses by the Croatian Public Health Institute (HZJZ) have confirmed that water from the public water supply network in the Lika-Senj County and on the islands of Pag and Rab does not contain harmful 'forever chemicals' and is completely safe for human consumption. The HZJZ announced this on Thursday.
In the latest testing cycle, conducted from 19 to 22 October, 23 samples of treated water from the public water supply network were collected and analysed. All analysed samples were health-compliant and met the prescribed microbiological and physico-chemical criteria for the health compliance of water intended for human consumption.
The tests covered the supply zones of Gospić 1, Senj, Tonkovića vrilo, Mrđenovac, Rab Primorje, Novalja, Pag Sjever, Pag Jug and Povljana. No PFAS compounds were detected at measurable concentrations in any of the 254 samples of water from the public water supply network in the Lika-Senj County and the islands of Pag and Rab analysed to date.
PFAS compounds, known as 'forever chemicals', are a group of hard-to-degrade chemical substances that can persist in the environment and pose a risk to human health. For this reason, their presence in water intended for human consumption is subject to special monitoring.
The HZJZ, in cooperation with county public health institutes, continues enhanced monitoring of the quality of water from public water supply systems. Enhanced monitoring began on 11 August based on a decision by the Expert Committee for Water Intended for Human Consumption.
The results of tests to date confirm that water from public water supply systems in the observed area remains health-compliant and that there is no cause for consumer concern.
