A woman was struck by lightning on Sunday morning at a campsite on the island of Krk and was subsequently airlifted to the Klinički bolnički centar Rijeka (Rijeka University Hospital Centre), where she was admitted to intensive care, the portal Rijeka Danas reported.
The emergency medical service received the report at approximately 7.10am. The Rijeka University Hospital Centre confirmed that the patient was admitted to the Objedinjeni hitni bolnički prijem (Integrated Emergency Department). "After treatment, the patient was admitted to the intensive care unit, where all necessary procedures are being carried out," the hospital stated.
According to 24sata, citing a reader's account, the woman was holding an umbrella at the time of the strike, and a rescuer who happened to be nearby performed resuscitation.
No further official information regarding the patient's health condition has been released, and the circumstances surrounding the lightning strike are still being established.
The severe weather also struck neighbouring Lošinj that same morning. According to Morski.hr, lightning caused a forest fire between Veliki Lošinj and Sv. Ivan hill, which was quickly tackled by the Lošinj firefighters, while heavy rain passed through the island's campsites in the early hours.
