Imotski ended 2025 with more births than deaths: 116 children were born and 81 people died, resulting in a natural population increase of 35 residents, the City of Imotski announced, citing data from the Croatian Bureau of Statistics.
For every 100 deaths last year, there were 143 live births, meaning the vitality index stood at 143.2. This places Imotski among the few Croatian towns with positive natural population movement.
Demographic recovery is also visible in the preschool system. For the 2026/2027 academic year, all children from the city area meeting the prescribed conditions have been enrolled, meaning more than 500 children will attend the Imotski Children’s Kindergarten (Dječji vrtić Imotski), 50 more than the previous year.
The city is securing additional space by reconstructing and repurposing a building on Blajburška Street, where premises are being fitted out for two educational groups, including day-care rooms, changing facilities, sanitary blocks, and a professional kitchen. Alongside the new kindergarten, a children’s playground is being built, and investment is also going into playgrounds in Medvidovića Dragi and near the branch kindergarten in Vinjani Donji.
The three projects together cost around €250,000, of which €109,000 is secured from external sources, while the remainder is covered by the city budget.
Mayor Luka Kolovrat assessed that investments in young families and supporting infrastructure are the city’s most profitable expenditures. "I am particularly pleased by the data showing a growing number of returning families who have realised that our town offers good living conditions," he said.
Demographic policy, he added, alongside financial support, entails quality kindergartens, safe play spaces, and better living conditions for young families across all parts of the town.
