At the Sušak-Pećine railway junction, near Rijeka, a serious incident occurred when three wagons of a freight train derailed. Although no one was injured in the incident, it had serious consequences for transport connectivity. A disruption occurred in traffic between Rijeka and Škrljevo, which resulted in the diversion of passenger traffic. Passengers were transported by replacement buses, which caused additional congestion and delays in public transport.
This was not the first incident on this section in recent times. On the same date, 2 September, at 9:10, a passenger train had also derailed at the same station. These consecutive incidents have raised concerns among local residents, who have expressed concern about the safety of traffic on this section.
Residents have expressed concern, stating that the turning of trains towards Brajdica represents a critical point on this section. They believe that the cause of such incidents is the inappropriate speed of trains, indicating the need for stricter oversight and compliance with prescribed speeds in this sensitive part of the railway network.
