Aleksandar Vučić, the president of Serbia, has expressed concern over potential changes in the political landscape of a neighbouring country, highlighting that such changes would have direct and negative consequences for the Serbian population in that region. According to him, the arrival of a new administration in the neighbouring state would not bring only administrative changes, but would directly affect the daily lives and freedoms of the Serbian community.
Vučić stressed that in such a scenario, Serbs would be forced to accept behaviour and attitudes they would otherwise not wish to accept. This assessment is based on the view that a change in power in the neighbouring country would lead to a loss of security and specific rights previously enjoyed by the community, placing them in a subordinate and insecure position within their own environment.
Particular emphasis was placed on the risks to cultural and symbolic expressions. Vu warning was issued that the future administration could impose changes affecting traditional customs and expressions, citing the example that citizens might be forced to behave in ways they do not wish, including in cultural and symbolic aspects.
Particular attention was drawn to the potential change in attitudes towards historical symbols. Vučić stressed that in the event of a change in power, traditional customs and symbols, such as the 'for the home' salute, might be treated in a completely different manner. In such a scenario, he noted, this could be interpreted as European cooperation, although in reality it would represent pressure on traditional values.
