The 15th Chakavian Language Festival "Stjepan Štefe Pulišelić" will be held on Saturday, 29 August, at 20:00 in front of the historic building of the Brač Island Museum in Škrip. The event is dedicated to the preservation and cultivation of the local Chakavian dialect, with organisers emphasising that Chakavian is a vital foundation of Brač's cultural identity.
The island is noted for having a whole palette of Chakavian dialects and storytelling traditions, which the festival seeks to bring to the public each year through stage and poetic expression. This year, the programme is particularly focused on the poetic work of Vladimir Nazor, with the edition dedicated to him on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of his birth.
Nazor was born in Postira, and Brač is remembered as one of the enduring sources of his inspiration. For this reason, two writers from the same island and two great literary stories symbolically meet in Škrip on Saturday, further linking the local language with the island's literary heritage.
The programme is free for visitors and takes place in the evening in front of the museum building in Škrip. In doing so, it continues the tradition of gathering at a site that preserves the history of Brač Island, alongside the nurturing of the Chakavian language.
