Meta is currently developing a new generation of smart glasses, referred to in internal documents by code names. Unlike current models equipped with visual sensors, these new devices do not include built-in cameras, aiming to avoid some of the legal and ethical challenges associated with recording in public spaces.
According to available information, the device, tentatively named Luna, is equipped with six microphones and integrates with Meta AI. This technological configuration suggests that the device’s primary functionality will focus on audio interactions and voice commands, rather than visual recording of the surroundings. This approach could be a response to increasingly strict regulations limiting the use of camera-equipped devices in public spaces, such as courtrooms or specific hospitality venues.
The technical specifications indicate that the device will feature two different frame styles, tailored to users' aesthetic preferences, including styles similar to classic Clubmaster and Burbank models. This flexibility in design may facilitate the acceptance of the technology by a wider range of users, who are seeking discreet solutions for everyday use.
Meta previously integrated a LED indicator into its existing devices to signal activity, a step towards greater transparency. The company states that the system is designed so that the camera ceases to function if the indicator is tampered with, thereby ensuring user privacy and preventing unauthorised recording. These safety measures are part of Meta’s broader strategy to balance innovation with respect for user privacy.
The new devices are expected to be unveiled by Meta at the upcoming Meta Connect conference, where the company will detail the capabilities and features of the new smart glasses. This move could significantly impact the smart device market, stimulating competition and encouraging the further development of technologies that combine advanced functionality with respect for user privacy.
