Iran is expected to receive its first batch of Chinese man-portable air defence systems (MANPADS) within weeks. Three sources confirmed that the first delivery would involve up to 400 units. The value of the purchase is estimated at between $60m and $70m. The contract covers the procurement of 300 to 400 systems.
The systems include Chinese QW-12 and FN-16 missiles. The contract was concluded with the company Zhongqing Baoshang International, which acted as an intermediary between the Iranian side and the Chinese supplier. The intermediary’s parent company is the Zhongqing Bao Shang Group.
The Chinese foreign ministry firmly denied the allegations of arms delivery. It stated that the accusations were completely unfounded. China emphasised that it is acting to promote peace in the region. It rejected any link to arms sales to Iran.
Iran is seeking to arm itself following months of fighting. The US and Israel have targeted facilities linked to Iran’s missile and drone programmes. Iran has responded with ballistic missiles and drones. This has further escalated tensions in the Middle East.
The Iranian foreign ministry did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment on the matter. The situation remains tense. The delivery of new weapons could influence the further course of the conflict.
