Customs officers at the Gunja border crossing detected an attempt to bring €71,400 in undeclared cash into the customs territory of the European Union on 2 November 2026. The money was found during the inspection of a passenger vehicle driven by a citizen of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The cash was located in the driver’s personal bag. The driver did not declare the cash to the competent authorities upon entry into the European Union, thereby breaching the rule requiring amounts of €10,000 or more to be declared when entering or leaving the EU.
The passenger failed to fulfil the legal obligation to declare cash to the Croatian Customs Administration (Carinska uprava) or the border police via the prescribed form in written or electronic format. The declaration obligation applies to amounts of €10,000 or more, or the equivalent in other currencies.
On the same day, he was issued an administrative penalty order for an offence under Article 41 of the Foreign Exchange Business Act. He was fined €13,260.
Failure to comply with cash declaration rules across the European Union border can lead to the temporary seizure of funds and substantial fines. The movement of cash across the EU border is therefore subject to specific rules which travellers must observe.
