The presence of West Nile virus genome has been confirmed in the Belgrade municipality of Čukarica, specifically at the Ranžirni kolodvor site in Železnik. The sample, taken from a Culex mosquito caught during routine monitoring, was analysed using Real-time PCR.
This information was confirmed by the Laboratory of the Sector for Ecology and Environmental Improvement at the Public Utility Company "Gradska čistoća" (City Sanitation). According to the statement, only one positive specimen was identified among the mosquito samples collected from the Belgrade area, indicating an isolated case at the aforementioned location.
The Sector for Ecology and Environmental Improvement has announced that it will continue daily monitoring of mosquito populations across all Belgrade municipalities. In addition to monitoring, teams from the sector conduct almost daily mosquito control treatments to prevent the further spread of potential public health risks.
Residents have been issued a strict appeal to use repellents and protective screens on windows and doors. They are also advised to avoid being outdoors during the period of peak mosquito activity, which runs from 19:00 to 24:00, to minimise the risk of bites.
West Nile virus is known for causing severe neurological complications. The recent death of Croatian actress Mira Furlan from complications of the virus has further drawn public attention to the importance of prevention and protection against mosquito bites in the region.
