The body of Lenko Bešić was discovered in a cell at the prison in Split on the Bilica. Bešić, 51, was serving a prison sentence for fraud and document forgery. The sentence he was required to serve was one year and two months, having been held in prison since the beginning of the current year.
The police located Bešić following a one-month search, as he had not voluntarily reported for his sentence. After it was established that he had died, the public prosecutor's office was informed. The investigation determined that there was no suspicion of a criminal offence, although dark marks were found on the prisoner's body. It is not known whether these marks were related to the cause of death.
Bešić was a repeatedly convicted criminal with a long criminal record. Twelve years ago, he was convicted alongside his partner for organising an international prostitution ring. The court had previously ruled that Bešić received a sentence of three years for the rape of an 18-year-old. In that case, it was established that Bešiah had falsely presented himself as a police officer to lure the victim from her car.
