The renovation of the abandoned site of the former autcamp is set to begin at the end of this year, according to current projections by the City of Rijeka. The project, valued at €2.7 million, covers 14,000 square metres by the sea. Under the agreement for co-financing with EU funds, all works must be completed by July 2028.
A total of 200 new trees and more than 1,000 native shrubs are planned to be planted, along with the development of boardwalks, a central amphitheatre, a children’s play area and a fitness zone. Birdhouses and insect hotels are also to be installed, Novi List reports.
The private sector is expected to carry out its part within a similar timeframe. The consortium Preluk, which holds a concession from the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County for approximately 3,100 square metres of coastline, has announced an investment of €1 million in the renovation of the long-neglected Skala hospitality venue. The City of Rijeka currently manages a total of 22,500 square metres of maritime property in this area.
The large paved area of the parking lot south of the road to Opatija is described as a separate, second phase of the project, for which a conceptual design has been prepared. However, before implementation, various interests must be aligned — from recreation and maritime property to existing concessions and transport infrastructure.
Simultaneously, the 582-metre stretch of coastline along the Akademi and Kostanj beaches is to be renovated. This measure, valued at €4 million, sees €3 million secured from EU funds through a call by the Ministry of State Assets published last autumn. The plan includes the reconstruction and expansion of the boardwalk, renovation of sea access and staircases, new public lighting and utility infrastructure, while the boardwalk will be adapted for people with disabilities and reduced mobility.
With the realisation of both projects, totalling €6.7 million, the coastal stretch from Kostela to the border with Opatija will be transformed. For the remaining sections of the western coastal belt, the timeline is not yet known.
