Academic Pavao Pavličić has published the book The Most Beautiful Croatian Insults, published by the Lađa od water organisation. The announcement of the work was published on Tuesday, with the publication exploring the fluid and playful nature of the Croatian language through 70 insults. The work is characterised by a great deal of humour, offering readers insight into the specifics of domestic expression.
The book details the origins of numerous words and expressions that are part of everyday speech. It addresses, for example, the etymology of the word 'ološ' and the verb 'pimli', while also exploring the connection between the term 'prčvarnica' and the word 'prč'. Special attention is paid to regional specificities, such as the meaning of the word 'jarac' in Dalmatia and the expression 'janpik' used by people from Osijek.
Pavličić emphasizes in his work that in Croatia, one curses at their mother frequently, an act interpreted through the lens of affection and fondness. According to him, the harshness of the swear words is not natural to foreigners, but is a natural and inherent phenomenon for locals. This approach indicates a deep connection between insults and the emotional and social context in which they are used.
The author focuses more on how insults live in everyday speech than on their origins. The focus is placed on the functionality and evolution of these expressions within the Croatian linguistic space. Through this approach, the work becomes not only linguistically interesting but also a culturally relevant portrayal of how Croats communicate emotions through language.
