The Croatian town of Ploče has once again attracted media attention following negative ratings from foreign media and online communities. On the Reddit platform, users have declared it the saddest town in Europe, while the British Telegraph has ranked it among the most unattractive coastal destinations.
These titles have once again sparked debate about the perception of Ploče. Although the online polls are subjective, they contribute to the solidification of stereotypes about the town as a place avoided by tourists. In previous years, Ploče had already been named the ugliest town in similar rankings.
The British Telegraph, using data from the International Council of Elders, advises travellers to avoid Ploče. In an analysis of European coastal locations, the town was described as a decaying port dominated by a petrochemical plant and grain silos. This industrial landscape stands in contrast to the natural beauty of the wider area, affecting its aesthetic value.
The Telegraph notes that Ploče is located halfway between Dubrovnik and Split, at the mouth of the Neretva river. The town’s industrial character is often the subject of criticism in the context of tourist appeal, despite its strategic transport position.
Despite negative media coverage, Ploke retains important transport links. The town has a railway line to Sarajevo, though this section is currently operational only during the summer months. Additionally, a ferry line operated by Jadrolinija connects Ploče with Trpanj on the Pelješac peninsula, maintaining a link with the rest of mainland Croatia.
While Ploče has been the subject of criticism, the same platform has praised the nearby Croatian destination. Rovinj was included in the list of the most beautiful coastal locations in Europe, further highlighting the difference in perception between the two Croatian towns.
