Scientists have discovered fossilised feathers in the Hell Creek geological formation in Montana. The find was made during routine surveys, but detailed analysis confirmed that it is feather remains. This find is significant as it provides insight into the biological processes of the age of dinosaurs, although such remains in this specific layer are rare.
The analysis showed that the specimen belongs to a bird from the group Hesperornithiformes. Although these birds were present in that period, their presence in this specific formation is surprising to scientists. The group of Hesperornithiformes, also known as hesperornithids, encompasses species that went extinct following the mass extinction, including the impact of an asteroid 66 million years ago.
Researchers state that birds from this group had primitive feathers. Although this feather provided a certain degree of protection, experts believe it was not sufficient for survival in the extreme climatic conditions following the asteroid impact. This is a key factor in their extinction, unlike the group of birds from the dinosaur era, known as Neornithes, whose descendants have survived and today inhabit the Earth.
This difference in survival highlights the importance of adaptations to extreme conditions. The asteroid impact caused changes in the climate, including cooling, which complicated the survival of many species. Although some species managed to survive, others did not have the appropriate mechanisms to survive in such conditions. This find provides insight into the mechanisms of survival and extinction, highlighting the importance of understanding historical ecological changes for understanding current biological processes.
