The European Union will provide 61 million euros in aid to the most vulnerable people in Ethiopia, the European Commission announced. The aid is provided in the context of a sharp deterioration in the situation in the country.
The funds are intended for people affected by conflicts, displacement, disease outbreaks and climate-related risks. These are groups that, according to available information, are exposed to the highest risk and for whom urgent assistance is most needed.
In addition to the challenges mentioned, the aid includes the impact of El Niño, a climatic phenomenon that further complicates the already difficult situation on the ground. El Niño affects weather patterns and agriculture, which in turn affects the humanitarian needs of the population.
Particular concern is the fear of renewed conflict in northern Ethiopia. The prospect of a new outbreak of violence further increases the uncertainty and risk for civilians, which is why timely humanitarian aid is crucial.
The European Union is thus responding to the multiple crises facing Ethiopia — from the aftermath of conflicts and displacement to disease and climate extremes. A total of 61 million euros is directed towards those in most need of assistance.
