Prime Minister Andrej Plenković expressed his condolences on Saturday following the death of Mate Miša Kovač. Plenković stated that he had received the news of Mate Miša Kovač’s passing, one of the greatest and most prominent Croatian musicians, with deep sorrow.
The Prime Minister emphasised that few artists have managed to become symbols of their homeland and country. According to Plenković, Miša Kovač marked decades of the music scene with his distinctive voice, personality and unrepeatable interpretation. He noted that during a career of nearly half a century, Kovač achieved impressive success and that his songs had been awarded the highest honours.
Plenković highlighted that Kovač’s songs had become part of the shared cultural heritage and identity of Dalmatia and Croatia as a whole. He wrote that it is difficult to imagine family gatherings, celebrations and feasts, weddings and concerts, as well as many other moments of joy and festivity, without Kovač’s songs.
The Prime Minister noted that Miša Kovač’s connection to his birthplace Šibenik and Dalmatia had been particularly deep and inseparable, as was his bond with Hajduk and its fans. He emphasised that it was enough for Kovač to raise his hand for the entire stadium to sing along.
Plenković stressed that Miša Kovač was more than a singer. He stated that he had been a legend and icon of Croatian music and that his songs had become part of everyday life, tradition and collective memories. He added that Kovač’s greatest hits would remain permanently inscribed in the musical heritage, in Croatian culture and in the lives of numerous generations.
On behalf of the Government of the Republic of Croatia and personally, Plenković expressed sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues, as well as to all who knew and loved Mate Miša Kovač.
