A traditional event that has brought participants together for decades took place in Devon, with this year’s cohort featuring the first group including young people from regions marked by deep geopolitical divides. Many of those present come from different sides of current global conflicts, giving this year’s gathering a special, layered context compared to previous years.
At first glance, the event appeared to be a typical summer school without political tensions. Teenagers enjoyed the sunny weather, playing volleyball outdoors, while others engaged in arts and crafts in indoor spaces. Preparations for the upcoming talent show were also underway in a relaxed atmosphere, creating the impression of a typical holiday and peer bonding.
However, beneath the surface of the usual fun, intense discussions were taking place. Participants spent three weeks in a boarding school in Tavistock, which allowed for deepening acquaintance and dialogue despite differences in cultural and political background. This closeness was key to breaking down prejudices and building mutual understanding.
Although voices were heard noting that the experience was challenging due to the heavy topics addressed, the majority of participants rated the time as life-changing. This perspective indicates that the dialogues and shared experience successfully overcame the barriers that often divide their communities in everyday life.
