Police during traffic checks in the Brod-Posavina county area caught two drivers driving under the influence of alcohol. One of them was also driving without a valid driving licence, while the other refused a breathalyser test.
The first case was recorded on Saturday, 7 November, at around 4 a.m., when police on the North main road (Sjeverna vezna cesta) in Slavonski Brod stopped a car driven by a 36-year-old. A breathalyser test established 0.87 per mille of alcohol in his blood. It was also established that he had got behind the wheel before re-obtaining the right to drive. Namely, the 36-year-old's driving licence had previously been revoked due to accumulated negative traffic offence points, and although he had obtained the right to retake the driving test, he had not yet passed it. Police arrested him and brought him to police premises, and a charge proposal has been submitted to the competent court for breaching the Road Traffic Safety Act.
The second case was recorded on Friday afternoon at the Svilaj border crossing. Leaving Croatia, police checked a car with Slovenian registration plates driven by a 43-year-old Slovenian citizen. As he was visibly intoxicated, he was offered a breathalyser test, which he refused. He was excluded from traffic, arrested and brought to police premises, where he was held until the effects of the intoxicating substance wore off. A traffic offence order under the Road Traffic Safety Act was issued to him for 1,386.36 euros, including court costs.
The police remind that in connection with St. Martin's Day celebrations they have heightened traffic control and once again urge drivers to observe traffic regulations and not to get behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol.
Additionally, a traffic accident with an injured person occurred at the intersection of Kraljice Jelene, Andrije Štampara and Vladimira Nadzora streets in Slavonski Brod on Tuesday at around 10.30 a.m. An eyewitness established that a 45-year-old, while driving a private car, when turning left failed to adjust his speed and struck a 53-year-old pedestrian who had already stepped onto the pedestrian crossing. It was also established that the 45-year-old left the scene of the accident, but was found very shortly afterwards. The injured pedestrian received medical treatment at the hospital in Slavonski Brod, and police officers have submitted a criminal complaint to the competent state attorney's office against the 45-year-old on suspicion of committing a criminal offence of causing a traffic accident in road traffic.
