An extensive forest cleaning operation begins tomorrow, 31 October, on the Sveti Petar peninsula. This is the first such coordinated action in many years and will be carried out continuously throughout the winter months, with completion planned by the start of the summer season.

The operation will involve staff from the Public Fire Brigade, members of the Volunteer Fire Brigade and employees of Makarski komunalac (Makarska Municipal Services), in cooperation with Hrvatske šume (Croatian Forests). All work will be conducted under the supervision of the competent forester, ensuring professional and safe execution of field operations.

The focus is on fire protection, safety and improved accessibility of the peninsula. The main objective of the operation is the preventive removal of low vegetation, shrubs and dry, hazardous branches to reduce the risk of fire spread. This aims to reduce the likelihood of fire transferring from ground-level vegetation to tree canopies, a key factor in preventing major damage.

Particular attention will be paid to areas along forest paths and locations where larger numbers of people gather. This is intended to ensure better access for fire interventions and safer movement for citizens and visitors. The removal of dry branches from higher parts of trees using telescopic saws is also planned, which will further reduce the danger of falling branches and fire spread.

Makarski komunalac will provide a branch shredder for the cleaning needs. Larger pieces of wood that are not removed will be neatly stacked to maintain the orderly appearance of the area. The operation is part of the City of Makarska's broader effort to protect the Sveti Petar peninsula in the long term, making it safer, more accessible and better maintained for citizens and visitors, while preserving its natural values.
